Olivier Rousteing showed his latest collection for Balmain in Paris today and one thing is for sure: this is not the Balmain army of past. The designer writes in a letter to show goers, “My Balmain army has shed its armor.” Inspired by the strong women Rousteing has gotten to know over the past six years while at the luxury house, this collection speaks to the “serene, confident, and modern manner in which the face life,” says the note. “Those women never shy away from showing their softer side, sure in the knowledge that there’s no longer any need to shout.”
Before the show, Doutzen Kroes, Alessandra Ambrosio, Hailey Baldwin, Josephine Skriver and many other top models were spotted arriving at the show location. Would the walk or sit front row? Only time will tell.
Expected front row fixtures, Kim Kardashian-West and Kourtney Kardashian were spotted holding court while the live band section prepped their instruments to play. The audience fans themselves with show notes, because as a friend texted, “It’s legit a hot jungle in here.”
Speaking of the jungle, or garden as Rousteing calls it in the show notes, “the calmness of today’s garden runway reflects the spirit of a new age.” Rousteing has settled into a relaxed groove and the clothing reflects it. Where Rousteing’s Balmain always seemed to be about tight, tighter, tightest—these clothes moved away from the body. The sex appeal is still there but it’s dialed down and more languid.
Natasha Poly opens the show in Balmain’s signature brown.
The show ends and Rousteing takes his bow and blows kisses to those around him. It’s a new dawn and a new day for the designer and as Nina Simone says, it’s clear he’s feeling good.
